The Constitution hill is a living museum that takes you through the pages of South Africa’s historical past and the countries journey to democracy. This site was once a prison and perhaps the only site of incarceration that imprisoned a number of world renowned men and woman as those held within the walls of constitution hill. Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Ghandi, Albertina Sisula- to name a few who served time here. Today this site is home to the constitutional court which endorses the rights of all South African citizens.

Next, we make our way towards the Johannesburg CBD – crossing the famous 284 metre long Mandela Bridge, which is the largest cable stayed bridge in the country, the bridge was officially opened in 2003, linking 2 of the main business districts in the city centre. As we navigate our way through the busy streets of the city centre, your guide will give you an orientation tour of Johannesburg, pointing out historical landmarks and buildings along the way, which includes Newtown Precinct, Mary Fitzgerald Square, Gandhi Square and Luthuli House.

Our next stop is the remarkable Carlton centre. This 50 storey, 223 metre tall skyscraper and shopping centre is Africa’s second tallest building. For those brave enough, the top of the centre holds one of the best panoramic views of the city of Johannesburg and its Northern suburbs. After soaking up the views, we make our way to the Apartheid museum. This one of a kind museum takes us back to the stormy years of the Apartheid era. Showcasing the rise and fall of Apartheid through a series of 22 individual exhibitions that take you on an emotive journey from the heart wrenching struggle for freedom and equality, to the moment of election of South Africa first black president – the late Nelson Mandela.

After an emotional journey through the Apartheid museum, it’s about mid-day, you are welcome to grab a bite to eat and something to drink at the Truth Café (own expense). We leave the museum at about 14:00 and hit the road to Soweto! As the road unravels before us, we pass many iconic landmarks such as the famous FNB stadium, Baragwaneth hospital and the massive brightly painted Soweto towers.

For the rest of the afternoon, we cover some of Soweto’s most significant heritage sites that commemorate the city’s struggle and fight during the Apartheid era. As we navigate the popular streets and local markets that display the energetic vibrancy of this multi-cultural lifestyle of the people in Soweto. It’s time to stretch our legs and get our boots dirty as we go on a walk through dusty streets of an informal settlement and pay a visit to a community centre (time permitting). After our walk, our next stop is the Hector Peterson museum that was built in honour and memory of a young boy and other school children who died in the 1976 Soweto Uprising.

You also have the extra option of taking a walk through the Regina Mundi church and the Nelson Mandela Museum (own cost). As we make our way to the energetic cultural hub of Vilakazi street and historic suburb of Orlando west. As our mesmerizing day comes to an end, your guide will drive you back to your accommodation in Johannesburg.
