From the stadium, we will make our way towards the beating heart of Soweto, passing by the Baragwaneth hospital, a massive local taxi rank and the significant suburb of Diepkloof. From here, we will make our way to Motsoaledi informal settlement. We will take a leisurely stroll through the dusty streets passing street vendors, cafes and craft markets, catching a glimpse into the everyday life of the people in Motsoaledi. Our journey then takes us through Orlando West, to the hub of Soweto where one can feel the electric buzz of this little city.
Our first stop here, will be outside the Regina Mundi Church and freedom square for a quick chat and a chance for photos (optional to go inside at own expense) from here we make our way to the historic Hector Pieterson Museum for an educational formal tour. Then it’s time to soak up the vibrancy of Vilkazai Street. We pass iconic monuments and the homes of the late Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Winnie Mandela.
If time permits, you will have the extra option of entering the Nelson Mandela museum (own expense). Our morning comes to end at a local restaurant beneath the brightly painted Soweto towers. Tantalise your taste buds and delve into the local cuisine and have a “Shisa nyama” (local Sowetan dish) and take a walk through the craft markets for some souvenir shopping. For the adrenaline junkies, there is the option of doing the bungee jump from the Soweto towers (own expense and if time permits).
After lunch, we make our way back to Johannesburg city centre or as the locals call it the “CBD”, for a visit to the apartheid museum. Listen to a short explanation of the museum exhibits, you will have a chance to explore the museum at your leisure until it is time to depart.
