Daily Itinerary.

Day 1: Johannesburg – Lesotho / Malealea (Distance Traveled +/- 500km).
Beating the morning traffic, we leave the city of gold (Johannesburg) behind us driving south-east crossing into the Orange Free State province. The Free State is a rural farming province of wide horizons and beautiful blue skies, with farmlands, mountains, goldfields and widely dispersed towns. Cutting through to Ladybrand, we cross the border into Maseru. Lesotho, officially the Kingdom of Lesotho, is a landlocked country completely surrounded by South Africa. Climbing spectacular scenic mountain roads, we head for Malealea, a fun place to be situated in the remote part of Western Lesotho that is absolutely breathtaking in its natural beauty. Offering us time to truly experience traditional Basotho life. Arriving during the early afternoon, we visit an authentic local Basotho village where we explore and browse the traditional handmade crafts and beaded jewelry, while deciding on some fantastic optional activities offered for the next day.  The evening is spent watching various Basotho children’s choirs and local Basotho music bands, while enjoying cool sundowners from the lively bar where you get to meet good people from all over the world.

Includes: Malealea trading post, Basotho village walk.
Optional extras: N/A.
Accommodation: Malealea Lodge (Twin share Basotho huts with shared facilities).

Taking in the clear crisp morning air, after our breakfast, we saddle up on an enjoyable guided pony trek following narrow trails and paths weaving through the rural mountainous terrain. Beginner riders can ask for a Basotho Child (at your own expense) to accompany you and lead your pony adding value to the local community. The rest of the day is free for us to choose selected hiking trails across marvelous terrains, visiting nearby waterfalls or bushman painting sights around the great Maluti Mountains. For people who are genuinely interested in finding out about Traditional healers, you can book an appointment with the village Ngaka ya Setso (Sangoma) who will throw bones and discuss your future well-being. Another option is to enjoy a leisurely day interacting with locals, visiting schools and markets or just taking time out chilling on the sun deck and pool. The evening brings the smell of wood fires burning and as dinner is prepared we enjoy our last night relaxing under the stars.

Lesotho is a landlocked country located in Southern Africa. It is completely surrounded by South Africa, and is just over 30000 square kilometres in size with a population of roughly two million. The largest city and the capital is Maseru. Because of its altitude, it remains cool throughout the year. Lesotho is known for its beautiful mountains, local villages and its wildlife.

Lesotho’s population is roughly 2,067,000. 75% of the population live in rural areas, however, it is estimated that annual increase of urban population is 3.5%. Population density is lower in the highlands than in the western lowlands. Most of the population stay in small villages, and build huts made out of mud which you can only access either my horseback or by foot.

Lesotho is definitely a destination for you if you enjoy seeing truly beautiful sights with endless mountain ranges. In many parts of Lesotho there is no technological interference, meaning that it takes you out of your comfort zone and back into the real world.[1]

“Explore this beautiful mountainous country with one day or overnight pony treks, hiking, mountain biking and a number of other activities. Lesotho has got something to offer everyone. Come explore Lesotho and enjoy the culture of Basotho people.

Malealea is a gateway to Lesotho or a perfect ending for your Lesotho Trip from Sani Pass. East West South or North.”
